For generations, Mazda has been known as the manufacturer that packs as much fun and technology into their vehicles as possible. Whether it’s the legendary Mazda RX-7 or the family-friendly Mazda CX-9, their commitment to getting the most out of every vehicle goes back decades. In 2020 that means taking efficiency to the next level, and the new generation Mazda Skyactiv-X engine platform is heading to our Burlington dealership for 2020.

What is Skyactiv-X?

With over twenty years of research, Mazda has sought to reinvent the internal combustion engine to deliver more fuel economy than ever before without sacrificing power or driving experience. The fruit of that labor is the Skyactiv-X engine, which is finally going into production for the 2020 model year.

In a traditional gasoline engine, fuel and air mix in the combustion chamber before a spark from the spark plug ignites the mixture and creates thrust. When you hear about cylinder count (I.e. Four-cylinder, six cylinder, etc), that is referring to the number of combustion chambers your engine contains.

Rather than relying on a spark plug to create the ignition for the fuel and air mixture, the Skyactiv-X engine uses compression to create heat and ignite the mixture. This allows for less fuel to be present in the chamber in order for ignition to occur, and therby improves fuel economy.

If this sounds similar to a diesel engine, that’s because it is. The Skyactiv-X engine uses the concept of a traditional diesel engine but applies it to standard gasoline, which emits fewer particulates and makes for a cleaner burn and cleaner air. Altogether this new Mazda engine offers 20-30 percent better fuel economy while also improving torque and not sacrificing top end power. In short, this engine can enhance both your driving experience and your fuel budget at the same time.
